What did I learn from this season. I don't really like training. It's a release for stress, but it's not my favourite thing. But the training pays off on race day when I'm reeling in runners like bass. I'm the one with the endurance; I'm the one with the kick at the end. And that makes the training worth it.
Another benefit of training this year is that I lost enough weight to be featured in the firefighter calendar for my department. It's all about charity, of course (although my wife is pretty impressed).
I guess training is good, I just wish it wasn't so hard.
Well, I leave for Ottawa on Saturday morning. It's the annual September 11 memorial in the nation's capital. I'm going as a member of my dept. honour guard. I'm the sole piper in the bunch.
Try to take a moment in your busy day to think about the 343 FDNY firefighters who didn't come home on 9-11, and the police and paramedics as well. It's also a time to think about all emergency workers killed in the line of duty.
I felt like a long run yesterday, so I loaded Kahuna's latest podcast into the mp3 player, and headed out on a 10K run (long for me). I wanted to experiment with Galloway's run/walk method. Lo and behold, by running 3min and walking 1min, my time was 2 minutes faster than a straight run!
And as if to reward me, the Gods gave me a fire to fight that night. From 12:30 until 05:00 I worked like a dog. So sleep was welcomed this morning.
